Authorities in the southern province of Kien Giang have detained and quarantined eight Vietnamese women who illegally entered the country from Cambodia.
The women were found near Ha Tien Town on Tuesday midnight by the provincial border force. The women had hired a boat to flee to Vietnam following warnings of a potential Covid-19 resurgence in Cambodia. The boat also transported two Cambodian men.
At the Ha Tien International Border Gate’s Border Post, the two Cambodian men said that they were hired to take the eight Vietnamese women to Kien Giang.
The women said they paid the fees of USD120-150 per person to be transported to Cambodia illegally by road. However, they wanted to return to Vietnam to avoid being affected by Covid-19 in Cambodia, so they decided to flee. The fees for being brought back to Vietnam is USD100-130 each.
The admitted the illegal entry into Vietnam is to avoid paying Covid-19 quarantine fees as stipulated.
In August, authorities in An Giang Province also detained 41 people who illegally entered Vietnam from Cambodia. They lived in Siem Reap and Posat provinces in Cambodia. Due to their difficulties, they wanted to move to Vietnam. All of them lacked personal papers.
