Latest Map of Southeast Asia E-commerce released on December 3.
Shopee and Lazada are still fighting for the number one spot in Southeast Asia, according to the latest Map of Southeast Asian E-commerce jointly conducted by the iPrice Group, App Annie, and SimilarWeb.
Both the Shopee and Lazada e-commerce platforms had strong mobile apps with high numbers of users in the third quarter of 2019. Lazada topped the rankings in four of the six countries studied: Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.
Shopee ranked first in Indonesia and Vietnam, with the two e-commerce markets being evaluated by Google as having the highest potential in Southeast Asia.
Other notable e-commerce platforms in Southeast Asia’s mobile app rankings were Tokopedia, a unicorn from Indonesia, along with Vietnam’s Sendo and Tiki.
The Tiki and Sendo mobile apps ranked eighth and ninth in the region, respectively, in terms of monthly users. Sendo alone also appeared in the top 5 most downloaded e-commerce apps in the third quarter.
The report also revealed some new trends in Southeast Asian e-commerce in 2019. Nine of the ten platforms with the highest monthly active users are multi-sectoral apps, expect for Zalora. This shows that regional users preferred to shop on multi-sectoral apps.
The trend towards the new concept of “shoppertainment” – a combination of shopping and entertainment – has appeared on Southeast Asian e-commerce platforms, according iPrice’s third quarter report.
Almost all major e-commerce platforms in the region are testing the livestream feature on the shopping app this year, and linking with entertainment superstars to attract buyers to entertainment livestream shows that combine sales.
Lazada first launched this feature in March and invited female artist Dua Lipa to perform live on their birthday. Shopee launched the same feature in June and signed with superstar Ronaldo for the 9/9 shopping campaign.
During the last 11/11 shopping festival, Shopee Philippines held a livestream for up to 12 hours, with many gifts and discount codes presented, including five new iPhone 11 phones.
In Vietnam, after a trial period, in September, before the year-end shopping holidays, Tiki also launched the TikiLIVE feature on their mobile apps. One quarter after the feature was launched, Tiki climbed up one spot in the download charts in Vietnam, surpassing Lazada and reaching the top 3 nationwide.
