Tropical Storm Kammuri is forecast to enter the East Vietnam Sea on Tuesday, unleashing powerful winds and gusts and worsening the weather in the Southeast Asian country.
The storm was located in the central region of the Philippines as of 7:00 am on Tuesday, with average wind speed measured at 135-165 kilometers per hour, according to the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.
It is expected to travel northwest in the next 24 hours and enter the East Vietnam Sea, becoming the seventh storm to hit Vietnam this year.
As of 7:00 am on Wednesday, Kammuri will be situated 550 kilometers northeast of Song Tu Tay Island in Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago.
Wind speed will be lowered to between 100 and 135km per hour, while gusts will reach up to 180km an hour.
The storm will continue traveling northwestward in the next 24 to 48 hours but it is forecast to turn southwest in the next 48 to 72 hours before weakening into a tropical depression.
The low-pressure system will be at a location 130 kilometers northwest of Song Tu Tay Island, with winds at 50 to 60km per hour.
The combined effect of the storm and an existing cold spell will cause strong waves and winds in the East Vietnam Sea and the coast between north-central Quang Tri Province and the southern province of Ca Mau.
