A court in the southern Vietnamese province of Binh Duong on Tuesday sentenced a local man to death for murdering three people in a family in late April.
Tran Trong Luan, 34, a resident in Binh Duong’s Tan Uyen Town, was convicted of murder and robbery.
According to the indictment, Luan broke into the house of 54-year-old Dao Thi Thu Cuc, located about 50 meters from his home in Tan Uyen, on the night of April 24 with the intention of robbing the place.
Cuc ran a grocery store at her house.
Before breaking into the residence, Luan had used metal wires to secure the doors of nearby houses from the outside so that neighbors would not be able to assist the victims when they called for help.
He also wore gloves and socks so as to leave no fingerprints or footprints behind at the crime scene.
During the robbery, Cuc caught Luan red-handed going through her closet and ended up being killed by having her throat slit open by the home intruder.
Nhi was Cuc’s youngest daughter, while Tran was Cuc’s granddaughter.
Luan then returned to his home and took dozens of painkillers in a failed attempt to commit suicide.
Cuc’s eldest daughter, who is the youngest victim’s mother, discovered the incident the following morning.
The murderer was captured on the same day.
According to local authorities, Luan had been unemployed and a gambling addict prior to committing the homicide.
Aside from the capital punishment, Luan was also required to pay the victims’ family VND400 million (US$17,200) as compensation for their losses, judges ruled on Tuesday.
